This nearly spineless, sun loving, Opuntia look-alike is native to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, where it can grow up to 20 feet tall. Blooms may appear in mid spring through early summer, and bloom colors vary from red to orange to bright yellow on the same plant. It preforms best when grown outdoors in containers or in the ground in subtropical or tropical regions. It requires plenty of warmth and sun, and although it is drought tolerant, it should be protected from frost. Propagation is done from seed, from woody stem cuttings, or softwood cuttings, but cut surfaces are allowed to callus before planting.
